Free–free absorption in hot relativistic flows: application to fast radio bursts

چکیده

ABSTRACT Magnetic flares create hot relativistic shocks outside the light cylinder radius of a magnetized star. Radio emission produced in such shock or at smaller than undergoes free–free absorption while passing through shocked medium. In this work, we demonstrate that can lead to negative drift frequency-time spectra. Whether it is related downward pattern observed fast radio bursts (FRBs) unclear. However, if FRB down-drifting due mechanism then will be pronounced those have isotropic kinetic energies $ \gtrsim 10^{44}$ erg. model, for an internal with Lorentz factor ∼100, normalized rate $|{\rm DR_{\rm obs}}|/\nu _{\rm mean}$ ∼10−2 per ms, where νmean central frequency pulses. The corresponding shell is, therefore, range 1010 cm and 1011 cm. This implies that, outflow consisting hydrogen ion, upper limit on mass few × 10−10 M⊙, which considerably low compared ejected from SGR 1806-20 during 2004 outburst.

Hot self-similar relativistic MHD flows

We consider axisymmetric relativistic jets with a toroidal magnetic field and an ultrarelativistic equation of state, with the goal of studying the lateral structure of jets whose pressure is matched to the pressure of the medium through which they propagate. We find all self-similar steady-state solutions of the relativistic MHD equations for this setup. One of the solutions is the case of a p...

On Associating Fast Radio Bursts with Afterglows

A radio source that faded over 6 days, with a redshift z ≈ 0.5 host, has been identified by Keane et al. (2016) as the transient afterglow to a Fast Radio Burst (FRB 150418). We report followup radio and optical observations of the afterglow candidate, and find a source that is consistent with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). If the afterglow-candidate is nonetheless a prototypical FRB aftergl...

Physical Constraints on Fast Radio Bursts

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are isolated, ms radio pulses with dispersion measure (DM) of order 10 pc cm. Galactic candidates for the DM of high latitude bursts detected at GHz frequencies are easily dismissed. DM from bursts emitted in stellar coronas are limited by free-free absorption and those from HII regions are bounded by the nondetection of associated free-free emission at radio wavelength...

Relativistic Flows at the Hotspots of Radio Galaxies and Quasars?

We review the broad band properties of X-ray detected hotspots in radio galaxies and quasars. We show that their collective spectral properties can be unified in a framework involving frequency dependent relativistic beaming and varying orientations to the observer’s line of sight. The simplest dynamic model consistent with this picture is a slowing-down relativistic flow downstream from the ho...

Testing Einstein's Equivalence Principle With Fast Radio Bursts.

The accuracy of Einstein's equivalence principle (EEP) can be tested with the observed time delays between correlated particles or photons that are emitted from astronomical sources. Assuming as a lower limit that the time delays are caused mainly by the gravitational potential of the Milky Way, we prove that fast radio bursts (FRBs) of cosmological origin can be used to constrain the EEP with ...
